Avid Codes?

Postby TrainingWhEElz » Mon Nov 09, 2009 12:07 pm

First post in Reviews, woohoo!

I'm probably going to trade some other parts for a brand new set of Code's with 8" rotors this afternoon. Do any of you guys run the Codes with 8" rotors? I'm just looking for some general feedback/performance review. From what I've found so far, they seem really strong, too strong in anyone's opinion? What about the moduation? I already have a bleed kit from my Juicy's. The Codes will be replacing my '05 Hayes 9s, so anything will probably be a huge improvement!

I don't own the Codes, but from a couple of brief demos, I didn't think they were too grabby. Modulation is going to be relative to speed and weight. So if they are too grabby then ride faster. That's why you have strong brakes right? I've never had brakes that I thought were too powerful. Especially at the end of a long day someplace like Whistler. Run a 160 or 185 on the rear for a bit less grab, and it will be less of a rock magnet too. I've interchanged avid and hayes brackets and rotors, perhaps you already have the parts to set it up? I dunno. I'd rock the codes over hayes if those were my choices.

Love the codes.

I would agree running the 185 rotors is a big improvement and you shed some weight. I am considering changing to the smaller rotors for good on my DH bike.

Thanks guys, I'm getting the Codes this afternoon. Trading the old A-line frame for brand new Codes, X9 drivetrain, and a Matchmaker. Can't refuse it since I was going to buy those parts anyways and they're worth more new than the used frame!

I'll probably try them out with the 8" rotors the consider downsizing to a 185mm.

And I agree, I've never ridden a brake that's too grabby either and if so, yeah, just ride faster 8-)

Brakes just slow you down any way.

I'm with Jrag on that one, brakes are for puffs.

But just for show.. :D I ran 200's on the canfield, loved every minute of them. They are boderline overkill at the 200mm, but when you need them you sure do appreciate them! Modulation was by far the best I have ever ridden, which I have tried & tested many excluding Hopes. The thing that pops out of my mind first is the fact that not once did they overheat, which I found weird!

The Codes are going on tonight and the test run will be night dh shuttles tomorrow. I'll let ya know how they turn out. Sounds like they're strong enough to keep me from putting it into a tree in the dark when I see it at the last second!

Love my codes (200's). A little heavy, you can always try the juicy lever mod to shed some extra weight too.

Front brake has not let me down, rear brake has been a little bitch tho. Squealed like a pig as soon as they broke in, must have been a bad run and think it had to do with the pistons not actuating evenly or sticking shut. Avid sent me a brand new rear brake and will be testing it out shortly...

On my demo, I'm not too worried about the weight, but the lever and calipers are huge! Got them put on, factroy bleed lets the levers pull to the bar and the hoses are about a foot too long. So, no rides yet, gotta get them dialed in.
