Cam Zink takes the Crankworx Crown

Kokanee Crankworx Day 7 Monster Energy Slopestyle from Whistler Creek Productions on Vimeo.

-Whistler, B.C.

It’s what we’ve been waiting for and today the Monster Energy Slopestyle went down. With blazing hot temperatures and dry conditions some of the top 16 riders in the world hurled themselves down the course with not much regard to bodies or safety. The day started at checking out the skills and finesse of the trials bikers over near the local creekbed. From there it was off to the Cheese rolling championships! Yes we saw people hurtling down the hillside all to grab that wheel of cheese. A now annual competition this British favorite shows who is willing to chase the “cheese”. After we filled ourselves with the cheese antics we checked out the village scene and got into position for the big show. After seeing Casey Groves tailwhip the Monster stepdown, then soon to be winner Cam Zink 360 it this course was open for the slaughter. Highlights were seeing near perfect runs by Brendan Semenuk and Darren Berrecloth, Both getting injured on the last hit the Kokanee showtime booter the rest of the field were waiting to take control. Cam Zink, Mike Montgomery and Casey Groves had top notch runs but it was Cam Zink’s 2nd qualifying run which sealed the deal with technical trickery and huge airs.

With Whistler’s biggest crowds since the Winter Olympics the nightlife was out of control. The Monster Energy afterparty at the Longhorn was a full house with Mat the Alien’s video DJ set and drinks flowing freely.

The efforts to to raise cash to purchase one of the most badass trail builing tools on earth just took a nice step forward! NWTA with the help and support of BRMBA, Riders & Sliders, Crazy Jake, Paula’s and sooo many others put together a successful day of shuttle riding and fun for a good cause. Joe Rykowski deserves a big hand for his role in making this event happen. Proceeds from this fundraiser are to be dedicated toward the purchase of Single Track Tools’ ST 240 radio controlled trail building machine. Designed and built by Barret Brown in North Plains, Oregon, this machine can create a 24″ tread in a fraction of the time a man with his shovel can! Really a cool machine! I was lucky enough to get a shot at operating the ST 240 and it is a powerful machine with a quarry grade bucket and thumb, 6 way blade and laterally retracting tracks. Think of this as a track hoe shrunk down. Video of the event coming soon and images can be seen at Bryan Heim Photography

Sandy Ridge: Hide & Seek, 388 loop fully OPEN as of Saturday July 24th, 2010

By Tom Slovak
Hide & Seek finally fully re-opening!

Over the past few months, Sandy Ridge has undergone a lot of maintenance & trail work. After the wet spring, the areas of this fresh trail that needed drainage work became apparent and the lower section was reworked first, and then re-opened. More recently, the bridge has been installed over Little Joe Creek. No more wet feet!

Additionally, a small loop section above and west of Hide & Seek, that connects into the upper Hide & Seek section, is open as of July 24th. This trail, the “338″ loop trail, provides additional mileage to the Hide & Seek trail, as well as providing a glimpse into what the rest of the trail at Sandy Ridge will look like. 338 is a part of a larger loop, Communication Breakdown, that will continue to be worked on over the next year.

UCI World Cup DH #4 – Champery – Watch it live

Posted on July 23rd, 2010

The fourth round of World Cup DH is happening this Saturday in Champery, Switzerland. The course looks super sick! Take a look at the video below, narrated by the designer and builder, Claudio Calouri. If this doesn’t get you psyched for DH, I don’t know if anything will. Watching the pros shred this track at speed is definitely something to see.

Freecaster will be broadcasting the event live, starting at 2:10AM PST Saturday (tonight).
